External access to OpenAsset

Overview

OpenAsset is installed on a server within your network. There are two ways for you to allow external access to OpenAsset:
  1. Provide users with VPN or SSH access into your network
  2. Make OpenAsset available outside of the network

Access OpenAsset through a VPN or SSH into your network

By using your VPN or SSH, the user is now within your network and they can access OpenAsset just like any other user within the office.

Make OpenAsset available outside of the network

The OpenAsset server itself will respond to any HTTP request given to it on port 80. Your IT can open up an external port of your choice on your firewall and route that through to port 80 on the OpenAsset machine.

For example, set up port 4500 on your external firewall to route through to port 80 on the OpenAsset machine. This will mean that external users can access OpenAsset using https://<your external ip / domain name>:4500.

Prior to configuring external access:

  1. We recommend that you make sure Anonymous access is turned OFF. Our Support team can help with this process.
  2. If you will be using SSL certificates provided by a Certificate Authority (recommended), please let us know, we can assist with advice, and can set up Apache to use SSL as well.
